Always the Same - Jelal Huyler

poem read by Timothy Arliss OBrien

Always the Same
Jelal Huyler

what amulet does any of this make ?

winged insect     trapped      between window pane

and      meshwire screen      losing seconds     all    day

i have become      more a leaving boat      which certain loved ones

swear they saw      drifting      that long away

when this door opens      with my stranger’s hand
on it ’s knob      who      steps

out      fromthrough it      ?

when i finally do      answer    the    call

whose voice is it      on this other side

surprised           that i am      here

Jelal Huyler is a biracial-Black poet who does not condone linear time.
